There is nothing quite like a slice of Classic Southern Buttermilk Pie to bring a touch of sweet nostalgia to your table.

Classic Southern Buttermilk Pie

If you have never made a Classic Southern Buttermilk Pie before, you will be amazed at how a handful of basic pantry staples can transform into a rich, tangy custard with a signature crackly top and a tender, flaky crust.

Ingredients

  • 1 unbaked pie crust (9-inch, homemade or store-bought)

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar

  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature

  • 1 cup buttermilk (whole buttermilk yields the best texture)

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg (optional, for a warm finish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Gently unroll or transfer your unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish, crimping the edges as desired. Set it aside.

  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and the all-purpose flour until they are fully combined. This helps prevent the flour from clumping when the wet ingredients are added.

  3. Combine the wet ingredients: In a separate medium bowl, lightly beat the eggs. Whisk in the buttermilk, slightly cooled melted butter, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and salt until the mixture is smooth and well blended.

  4. Create the filling: Slowly pour the wet mixture into the bowl with the sugar and flour. Whisk everything together gently until you have a smooth, unified batter.

  5. Pour and bake: Carefully pour the filling into your prepared pie crust. Sprinkle a tiny pinch of grated nutmeg over the top if you are using it. Place the pie on the middle rack of your oven and bake for 45 to 55 minutes.

  6. Check for doneness: You are looking for the edges of the filling to be puffed and lightly browned, while the very center should still have a slight, gentle jiggle to it when you tap the pan. If the crust edges start browning too quickly before the center is done, gently tent the edges with aluminum foil.

  7. Cool completely: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack for at least 2 to 3 hours before slicing. The custard needs this time to fully set up at room temperature.

Serve it just as it is, or with a light dusting of powdered sugar or a dollop of fresh whipped cream. Keep any leftovers covered in the refrigerator.
